If you are like me, when you hear the term fantasy fiction, you immediately conjure up maps of countries that don’t exist, an array of dungeons and dragons and as a wanna be fantasy writing friend of mine put it aptly as “animals that talk”. Isn’t it good to sometimes think of the unreal? That there are really dragons and vampires exist? Well, I have a wild imagination. In my mind, I already have explored the universe. Supernatural. Fantasy. All of this can be found in Martin’s kingdom of Westeros. But as anyone who has real novels, knows what makes them stand out is how utterly realistic they are. Sure there’s a demonic human being known as “the hound,” a whole lot of sword- fighting, and some kind of evil monster- like species I haven’t quite yet known that does not bleed. But what really pulls the viewers/ readers in is this feeling that- as in the modern world, actions have consequences. As it is to say, “When people are stabbed, they die. When kingdoms ignore debts, the bankers show up”. The characters understand their world, and we understand the characters. And just to give you a little taste of Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 5, the Baratheon rivalry ends, drawing different reactions from Catelyn and Littlefinger: Tyrion finds Joffrey’s defense plan at King’s Landing lacking, but also learns a mysterious secret weapon. Theon continues to prove himself to his father by sailing to the Stony Shore. Arya gets a promise from Jagen H’ghar and the Night’s Watch regroup at an ancient fortress called of the First Men.
